This special section examines Germany’s contested human rights history through postwar case studies on migrant housing advocacy, diplomacy toward the Global South, elite and grassroots perspectives, and colonial legacies. It argues that today’s polarized human rights debates continue a longer tradition of conflict over rights in Germany, reaching back to the nineteenth century.
